Living in Dr. Phillips, FL: History, Culture, and Buying or Selling Here

Dr. Phillips is an unincorporated community in Orange County, a suburb in southwest Orlando that is part of the Orlando metro area. It is a census-designated place rather than a city, and it is best known as Orlando’s dining district.

A short history of Dr. Phillips

The area is named for Philip Phillips, a Central Florida citrus magnate who helped develop key innovations in processing and packaging orange juice. By the early 1920s, he owned thousands of acres of groves across nine Central Florida counties. His holdings included land that is now Bay Hill, Orange Tree, Sand Lake Hills, Clubhouse Estates, and Turkey Lake Park. Where citrus groves once stood, the community grew into the residential area it is today. After Walt Disney World opened in 1971, growth in southwest Orlando picked up quickly, and the dining scene followed.

Orlando’s dining district: Restaurant Row

If you ask locals where to go for a great meal, many will point you to Dr. Phillips. The stretch of West Sand Lake Road known as Restaurant Row is the heart of it, running roughly between Dr. Phillips Boulevard and International Drive near I-4. Christini’s Ristorante Italiano opened there in 1984, when the area was still mostly orange groves, and steakhouses, seafood restaurants, and international kitchens followed. Dellagio Town Center, a Tuscan-inspired complex that opened in 2008, added even more.

Today the dining is varied and vibrant. You’ll find steak and seafood, Italian, sushi and Japanese robata grilling, Turkish, Brazilian churrasco, wine bars, weekend brunch, and happy hour spots. Restaurants named in local guides include Ocean Prime, Eddie V’s, Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris, Fleming’s, Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi, and Chima Brazilian Steakhouse, though restaurants change over time. Local guides describe Restaurant Row as a place where locals eat, for date nights, anniversaries, and everyday dinners, not just a tourist strip. Each year, Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining promotion brings special set-price menus to many of the area’s restaurants. For people who love to eat out, living near this scene is a real perk.

Who lives in Dr. Phillips

The community has grown steadily, from 7,963 residents in 1990 to 9,548 in 2000, 10,981 in 2010, and 12,328 in the 2020 Census. The 2010 Census showed a diverse community, including about 9.9% Asian and 12.9% Hispanic or Latino residents.
