Winter Park is in Orange County, part of the Orlando metro area, and its motto is “City of Culture and Heritage.” Its lakes, its college, and its arts scene have defined the city for more than 130 years, and they are a big part of why buyers fall in love with it.
A short history of Winter Park
The first settlers, David Mizell Jr. and his family, bought land between Lakes Virginia, Mizell, and Berry in 1858, and the settlement was first called Lake View, then Osceola in 1870. In 1881, Loring Chase and Oliver Chapman bought 600 acres and planned the town of Winter Park, which was chartered in 1887 and developed as a winter resort for visitors from the North. The railroad reached the area in 1880, and the Seminole Hotel opened on Lake Osceola in 1886. Rollins College was founded in 1885 as Florida’s first four-year college, and it remains a cornerstone of the city.
Culture and lifestyle
Winter Park is known for Park Avenue, a walkable shopping and dining district that dates back to the Henkel Block in 1891. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, the Bach Festival, and the Winter Park Concours d’Elegance add to the city’s arts scene. The Sidewalk Art Festival in Central Park draws over 250,000 visitors each year, according to the city. The Winter Park Chain of Lakes, linked by navigable canals, is a defining feature, and scenic boat tours are available.
Food and dining in Winter Park
Winter Park’s dining centers on the cobblestoned Park Avenue District, a tree-lined street where upscale restaurants sit beside museums and shops. According to Visit Orlando, the area includes restaurants recognized by the MICHELIN Guide, such as Prato, The Ravenous Pig, and ÔMO by Jônt. You’ll also find steakhouses and seafood, Italian kitchens, Mediterranean, Turkish, and Hispanic restaurants, farm-to-table spots, wine-focused dining, and coffee shops like Foxtail Coffee Co. The Winter Park Farmers’ Market runs on Saturdays. Restaurants change over time, but the walkable, polished feel of Park Avenue is a big part of the city’s character.
